The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to expanding its force structure from eight to 12 divisions, assuring that the newly established 83 Division, with headquarters in Benin City, Edo State, would soon become operational.
Shaibu gave the assurance on Thursday, November 5, 2026, during a courtesy visit to the Executive Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, at Government House, Benin City.
According to an official statement signed by Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director Army Public Relations, the COAS said the expansion was aimed at strengthening the Army’s operational capabilities, improving command and control, and enhancing its capacity to respond rapidly to emerging security threats across the country.
He noted that the establishment of the 83 Division would further strengthen the Nigerian Army’s presence in Edo State and the wider South-South region, particularly in addressing security challenges and improving operational effectiveness.
The Army Chief also disclosed that his visit to Edo State was part of efforts to assess operational activities at Headquarters 4 Brigade and commission key Army projects.
Among the projects are the Affordable Home Ownership Option for Soldiers (AHOOAS) and Civil-Military Cooperation initiatives designed to improve the welfare of personnel and strengthen relations between the Army and host communities.
Shaibu emphasised the importance of sustained collaboration with state governments and other stakeholders in addressing security challenges and creating an enabling environment for military operations.
In his remarks, Governor Okpebholo commended the Nigerian Army for its professionalism and contributions to maintaining peace and security in Edo State.
He assured the COAS of his administration’s continued support and collaboration with the military towards strengthening security and sustaining stability across the state.
The planned operationalisation of the 83 Division represents a key component of the Nigerian Army’s ongoing restructuring and expansion programme, aimed at building a larger, more responsive force capable of addressing the country’s evolving security challenges.
