The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Australian Federal Police (AFP) have forged a strategic alliance to intensify the fight against international drug cartels and dismantle transnational trafficking networks operating along the Nigeria-Australia drug route.

According to an official statement signed by the NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the partnership was formalised on Monday, November 2, 2026, through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the agency’s national headquarters in Abuja.

The agreement provides a framework for intelligence sharing, coordinated operations, capacity building and controlled delivery of illicit drug consignments to facilitate the identification and arrest of trafficking networks.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), described the agreement as a declaration of war against transnational drug cartels exploiting international borders to evade law enforcement.

Marwa said the partnership would combine the global reach of the Australian Federal Police with the operational capacity of the NDLEA to make the Nigeria-Australia drug trafficking route increasingly hostile and unprofitable for criminal networks.

He observed that drug trafficking had become increasingly transnational, organised and sophisticated, with Nigerian organised crime groups reportedly maintaining links to the Australia-Pacific drug route, particularly in the trafficking of methamphetamine and cocaine.

The NDLEA boss expressed concern that Nigeria was being exploited as a transit and sourcing hub for illicit substances, stressing that international cooperation remained critical to dismantling the networks behind the trade.

He expressed optimism that the agreement would translate into major joint seizures, arrests of high-value targets and successful controlled delivery operations, adding that the renewable pact would be implemented immediately.

Highlighting recent enforcement successes, Marwa disclosed that the NDLEA had intercepted 184.5 kilogrammes of cocaine intended for export and dismantled four methamphetamine laboratories in recent months, with Mexican nationals allegedly linked to the operations.

He further revealed that one of the laboratories yielded seizures valued at over $360 million.

Marwa also cited the dismantling of a Switzerland-based drug cartel allegedly operated by a Nigerian, Simon Amadi, following more than a year of collaboration with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), as well as French, Greek and Swiss police authorities. He added that assets linked to the cartel in Nigeria were also being targeted.

In her remarks, the head of the Australian Federal Police delegation, Ms Sandra Booth, described drug trafficking as a whole-of-society challenge requiring coordinated international action.

She commended the NDLEA for adopting a comprehensive approach to drug control, spanning prevention, enforcement and international partnerships, describing the agency’s existing relationships with foreign law enforcement organisations as commendable.

Booth warned that organised crime groups were increasingly using proceeds from drug trafficking to finance other serious criminal activities through what she described as a “crime as a service” model, recruiting young and vulnerable people into drug transportation, delivery and violent attacks against rival groups.

She noted that the consequences of the illicit drug trade extended beyond addiction to include family breakdown, community instability, gangland violence and deaths in Australia.

“Whilst Nigeria is a transit country, we are a destination country. And unfortunately for us, people will pay a lot of money for the commodity,” she said.

The AFP delegation leader stressed that Australia was committed to working with Nigeria to prevent illicit drugs from reaching its territory and protect its young and vulnerable population.

Emphasising the importance of the new partnership, Booth said both agencies must demonstrate commitment, integrity and determination in pursuing international drug trafficking networks.

“It is so absolutely necessary that we work together as a team, that we are forceful, that we are committed, that we show integrity, and we hunt as a pack. And I am very proud that we can now be part of your pack,” she stated.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by the Australian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ms Leilani Bin-Juda; Deputy High Commissioner, Timothy Milikan; other members of the AFP delegation, Andrea Humphrys and Susan Gray; as well as senior officials of the NDLEA.
