The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has raided illegal National Identification Number (NIN) enrolment centres in Gwagwalada and other locations, arresting several suspects and recovering equipment allegedly used for unauthorised enrolment and modification of personal data.
The enforcement operation was carried out by the Commission’s Inspectorate Compliance and Enforcement Unit (ICEU) as part of an intensified crackdown on illegal NIN enrolment, unauthorised data modification and extortion by unapproved operators.
According to an official statement signed by the Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, the operation is aimed at dismantling illegal enrolment networks and curbing unethical practices capable of undermining the integrity, security and credibility of Nigeria’s National Identity Management System.
The Commission expressed concern over the activities of unauthorised operators, noting that many of the challenges Nigerians encounter with their National Identification Numbers arise from bypassing established enrolment and modification procedures.
NIMC emphasised that NIN enrolment is exclusively conducted at its approved enrolment centres, while modifications to personal information should be carried out through its official self-service modification platform.
The Commission also advised NIN holders to download the NINAuth application from the iOS App Store or Google Play Store to enhance the protection of their identification numbers, facilitate the printing of NIN slips and access other security benefits.
The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, reiterated the Commission’s zero tolerance for extortion and other unethical practices, assuring Nigerians and legal residents of its commitment to providing seamless and hitch-free NIN enrolment services.
She urged applicants and existing NIN holders to patronise only NIMC-approved channels for enrolment and related services, warning against the use of unauthorised agents who may expose their personal information to security risks.
The Commission further urged members of the public to verify information about its services through its official website, www.nimc.gov.ng, or its verified social media platforms.
