The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has unveiled the newly constructed Headquarters of the Nigerian Army Medical Corps in Abuja as part of efforts to strengthen military healthcare delivery, improve personnel welfare and sustain the operational readiness of troops.
Shaibu unveiled the facility on Thursday, October 29, 2026, at Muhammadu Buhari Cantonment, Giri, Abuja, charging the Medical Corps to leverage the new infrastructure to enhance the quality of healthcare services available to officers, soldiers, their families and members of barracks communities.
According to an official statement signed by Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director, Army Public Relations, the Army Chief reaffirmed his commitment to the welfare of personnel, stressing that access to comprehensive and quality healthcare remained fundamental to troop morale, operational effectiveness and the overall performance of the Nigerian Army.
He explained that investment in military healthcare went beyond the treatment of illnesses, noting that the physical well-being of personnel and their families was essential to maintaining a healthy, motivated and combat-ready force.
The COAS emphasised that access to responsive and quality medical services would enhance operational effectiveness while giving soldiers confidence that their well-being and that of their loved ones remained a priority.
He commended the Nigerian Army Medical Corps for its sustained contributions to military operations, routine healthcare delivery and humanitarian interventions across the country.
Shaibu noted that the new headquarters would strengthen administrative coordination, improve the delivery of medical services and provide a conducive working environment for the Corps to discharge its responsibilities more efficiently.
He urged the Corps to maximise the opportunities provided by the facility to promote innovation, professionalism and responsive healthcare services across Army formations and units.
The Army Chief said the initiative aligned with his Command Philosophy of Sound Administration and the Soldier First Concept, which places personnel welfare at the centre of military leadership and institutional development.
Earlier, the Corps Commander Medical, Brigadier General Innocent Ewunchola, expressed appreciation to the COAS for his leadership and sustained investment in medical infrastructure.
Ewunchola assured that the Corps would remain committed to providing efficient, accessible and quality healthcare to all eligible beneficiaries, while ensuring the proper maintenance and effective utilisation of the new facility.
