The Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered) has conferred its Fellowship on the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, in recognition of his contributions to professional leadership and service to the nation.
The Fellowship was conferred on Thursday, August 20, 2026, during an investiture ceremony themed, “Leading Through Transformation: The Human Element in Modern Leadership.”
According to an official statement signed by the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the ceremony provided an opportunity for the Naval Chief to underscore the central role of people in achieving meaningful and sustainable institutional transformation.
Vice Admiral Abbas said organisations were operating in an increasingly complex environment shaped by rapid technological advancement, expanding access to information and evolving security and economic realities.
He noted that although technology, systems and other capabilities were important to organisational performance, people remained the critical factor in translating those capabilities into meaningful results.
The CNS said this was particularly applicable to the Armed Forces, where sophisticated platforms, including ships, aircraft and weapons systems, could only achieve their intended purpose when operated by trained, motivated and committed personnel.
He therefore identified effective leadership and quality personnel as essential to building a professional, motivated and mission-ready Nigerian Navy.
According to him, his Command Philosophy places emphasis on accountability, professionalism and personnel welfare as key enablers of an operationally effective Navy committed to excellent service to the nation.
The Naval Chief stressed that effective leadership went beyond directing personnel or managing resources, saying leaders must create an environment where their people understood the mission, accepted responsibility and remained motivated to give their best.
He described the Fellowship as both an honour and a renewed call to greater responsibility, continuous learning and service.
Vice Admiral Abbas also commended the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered) for its contribution to promoting sound management practices and developing leaders across the public and private sectors in support of national development.
The conferment of the Fellowship on the CNS was held alongside the presentation of Merit Awards, Life Membership Awards and other Fellowships to distinguished personalities.
The Naval Chief reaffirmed that purposeful and people-centred leadership remained essential to building strong and sustainable institutions, stressing that the true measure of leadership was the ability to leave people, institutions and the nation better than they were found.
