CAS Charges Future Commanders on Strategic Leadership, Says Synergy Critical to Mission Success

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, has reaffirmed that synergy among the Armed Forces is essential to achieving mission success in today’s complex security environment, urging future military commanders to embrace strategic leadership, jointness and innovation as critical enablers of operational effectiveness.

According to an official signed statement by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the CAS made the remarks while delivering a lecture titled “Military Strategic Leadership: My Perspective” to participants of Air War Course 12/2026 at the Air Force War College Nigeria (AFWCN), Makurdi, on Monday.

The participants comprised senior officers of the Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Army and Nigerian Navy, as well as allied officers from Botswana, Cameroon, Ghana and the Kingdom of Morocco.

Air Marshal Aneke noted that the evolving nature of contemporary security threats requires military leaders with foresight, adaptability and a collaborative mindset capable of translating national strategic objectives into operational success.

He stressed that effective military leadership extends beyond command authority to inspiring personnel, shaping institutions and delivering strategic outcomes.

Emphasising the importance of inter-service cooperation, the CAS declared that “Synergy is not optional; it is a strategic necessity,” explaining that integrated planning and coordinated execution enable commanders to achieve operational effects beyond the capability of any single Service. He added that the deliberate integration of airpower with surface forces remains fundamental to addressing modern security challenges.

Air Marshal Aneke further stated that his Command Philosophy is centred on building a highly motivated, professional and mission-ready force capable of delivering effective airpower in synergy with surface forces to achieve national security objectives.

He explained that this vision is being pursued through mission-focused training, personnel development, innovation, strategic partnerships and proactive measures to sustain operational readiness.

The CAS also underscored the importance of policy foresight in strategic leadership, noting that military leaders must anticipate future security challenges rather than rely on reactive decision-making.

Highlighting the human element of military capability, Air Marshal Aneke reminded participants that the strength of any Air Force ultimately lies in its personnel. He urged the officers to cultivate strategic thinking, ethical leadership, emotional intelligence and a lifelong commitment to professional development, describing investment in personnel as fundamental to operational excellence.

He also encouraged them to strengthen trust across the Armed Forces and with partner nations, noting that such collaboration remains the foundation for successful joint operations and enduring military effectiveness.

The lecture concluded with an interactive session during which participants exchanged ideas with the Chief of the Air Staff on strategic leadership, joint operations and future warfare. The discussions reinforced the need for stronger interoperability, enhanced joint force integration and the continuous development of military leaders capable of addressing emerging security challenges in support of Nigeria’s national security objectives.
