The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has confirmed that a Nigerian national, Mr. Jubril Akorede Abdulrahman, who was injured in the recent explosion at the Barzan Gas Supply Facility in Ras Laffan, Qatar, has been discharged from hospital and is recuperating under the care of his employer.

According to an official signed statement by the Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Mr. Abdulrahman survived the explosion and fire that occurred at the Qatar Energy-operated facility on Sunday, 21 June 2026, and is now recovering at accommodation provided by his employer.

The statement disclosed that Nigeria’s Ambassador to Qatar, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, immediately intervened upon receiving news of the incident, ensuring that Mr. Abdulrahman’s condition was closely monitored while keeping the Nigerian government fully informed throughout the emergency.

Ambassador Yakubu confirmed that the explosion occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. local time at the Barzan Gas Supply Facility operated by Qatar Energy.

At a press conference held in Doha on 22 June 2026, Qatar Energy stated that the explosion was accidental and not linked to sabotage or any hostile act. The company explained that the facility had only recently resumed operations following a scheduled shutdown that began in December 2025.

Emergency response teams from Qatar Energy and the Qatar Civil Defence Service swiftly contained the fire, while medical personnel attended to those affected.

The explosion left 66 people injured, all of whom are receiving medical care, with none reported to be in life-threatening condition. Those injured include nationals of Qatar, Nigeria, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, India and Nepal.

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NiDCOM, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, expressed relief over Mr. Abdulrahman’s recovery and extended the Commission’s sympathy to all those still undergoing treatment.

“We are glad that Jubril Abdulrahman is recovering and in safe hands. Our prayers are with him and with everyone still receiving treatment,” she said.

Dabiri-Erewa urged Qatar Energy to sustain the support being provided to all injured workers and ensure that Mr. Abdulrahman and the other victims continue to receive comprehensive medical care and welfare throughout their recovery.

The NiDCOM Chairman also commended Ambassador Yakubu for his prompt intervention and dedicated monitoring of the Nigerian victim’s condition from the onset of the incident.

The Commission noted that the Ambassador’s swift response exemplified the high standard of consular service expected in protecting the welfare and interests of Nigerians living abroad.
