The Nigeria Police Force has foiled a major railway vandalism syndicate, recovering infrastructure materials valued at over ₦400 million and arresting two suspects in a coordinated intelligence-led operation.
According to an official signed statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, the breakthrough was recorded by operatives of the Force Intelligence Department/Special Tactical Squad (FID-STS) on April 9, 2026, at about 1800 hours in Akwanga, Nasarawa State.
The suspects, Chisom Goodnews (32) and Ahmed Adamu (22), were apprehended following credible intelligence, leading to the interception of a trailer truck loaded with approximately 60 tonnes of vandalised railway tracks and sleepers. The materials were concealed beneath sacks of groundnut shells in an attempt to evade detection while being transported from Bauchi State to Ilorin, Kwara State.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the truck driver had been contracted for ₦2.5 million to convey the stolen items, with further findings pointing to an organised supply chain involving receivers of vandalised national infrastructure.
In a development described as a strong testament to integrity within the Force, the operatives reportedly rejected a ₦100 million bribe offered to compromise the investigation and facilitate the release of the suspects and exhibits.
The trailer used in conveying the materials has been recovered, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other members of the syndicate, including those behind the operation and intended beneficiaries.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, psc(+), NPM, commended the operatives for their professionalism, courage, and incorruptibility, noting that their conduct reflects the core values of the Nigeria Police Force.
The Force reaffirmed its commitment to protecting critical national infrastructure and intensifying efforts to dismantle criminal networks involved in vandalism across the country.
