The Nigerian Army has recorded a major operational breakthrough in its ongoing counter-insurgency efforts in the South East, as troops of 82 Division, in collaboration with sister services and other security agencies, dismantled a notorious camp belonging to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network, in Imo State.

According to an official signed statement, the operation was conducted on 24 April 2026 along the Ubaha Orsu axis of Orsu Local Government Area, following actionable intelligence. The mission formed part of a deliberate clearance and search operation targeted at dismantling IPOB/ESN hideouts and locating the remains of two abducted Nigerian Army personnel, Master Warrant Officer Linus Musa Audu and Private Gloria Mathew, who were reportedly murdered by the group in May 2022 while travelling for their traditional wedding.

The statement revealed that troops advancing towards the suspected hideout came under heavy attack from armed elements. However, they responded with superior firepower, successfully repelling multiple ambushes and forcing the attackers to retreat in disarray. The encounter, it noted, further exposed the persistent threat posed by the group to both security personnel and civilians.

Following the successful clearance of the camp, troops conducted an extensive search of the area, leading to the discovery of shallow graves believed to contain the remains of the slain personnel. The graves were subsequently excavated, and suspected human remains were recovered.

According to the statement, the recovered remains have been secured for comprehensive forensic examination, including DNA analysis, to confirm their identities. Authorities are also engaging with the families of the deceased to facilitate proper identification and ensure dignified burial arrangements in honour of their service and sacrifice.

The Nigerian Army stated that the operation underscores its commitment to justice for fallen personnel, while also demonstrating the continued degradation of IPOB/ESN operational capabilities across the region. It added that the discovery of the graves further highlights the brutality and disregard for human life exhibited by the criminal group.

The Army reassured the public that sustained operations would continue until all threats are neutralised and lasting peace is restored in the South East. It also commended law-abiding citizens for their cooperation and urged continued support through the provision of credible intelligence.

The statement reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s resolve to remain professional and steadfast in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
