The Department of the Air Force at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama, United States, has inducted Nigeria’s Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, into the prestigious International Honor Roll (IHR) Class of 2026 in recognition of his distinguished leadership and contributions to global air power.

The honour was conferred by Air University during a ceremony held on April 10, 2026, where Air Marshal Aneke was formally inducted alongside 15 other Air Chiefs and two equivalents of Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force from different countries. The recognition underscores Nigeria’s growing influence in international military leadership and strategic air power diplomacy.

Air Marshal Aneke had previously attended the Air War College at Air University in 2016 as a member of Seminar 7. The International Honor Roll programme is specifically designed to celebrate senior officers who, after graduating from the Air War College, have risen to the highest leadership positions within their respective air forces as Air Chiefs or senior enlisted leaders.

As part of the induction activities, the distinguished honourees were received by Kay Ivey, Governor of Alabama, at the Governor’s Mansion. The programme also featured a series of heritage and institutional visits across key historical and military landmarks in Montgomery.

During the engagements, the participants visited the Alabama Supreme Court, the Air University Library, the Enlisted Heritage Museum, the Maxwell Club, as well as the Air War College and the Senior Noncommissioned Officer Academy at Gunter Annex. The visits highlighted the enduring traditions of professional military education, strategic leadership development, and the strong bonds shared among alumni of one of the world’s foremost institutions for air power studies.

Air Marshal Aneke attended the ceremony with his wife, the National President of the Nigerian Air Force Officers’ Wives Association (NAFOWA), Mrs. Ngozi Aneke, alongside Nigeria’s Defence Attaché and other Nigerians residing in the United States. Their presence underscored the significance of the recognition not only for the Nigerian Air Force but also for Nigeria as a whole.

A major highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of International Alumni certificates by Lieutenant General Trulley, symbolising Air University’s acknowledgement of the Chief of the Air Staff’s exemplary professional trajectory, strategic leadership, and his role in advancing air power capabilities in Nigeria and strengthening international defence cooperation.

The induction of Air Marshal Aneke into the International Honor Roll further reinforces the Nigerian Air Force’s reputation for producing globally respected leaders committed to excellence, innovation, and collaborative defence partnerships across the international community.
