Nigeria is taking a strategic step toward building a strong presence in the rapidly expanding digital sports industry, as the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) begin moves to develop the country into a major hub for e-sports.

The initiative followed a high-level meeting in Abuja where the Director General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, led a delegation on a strategic visit to the Chairman of the NCC, Idris Olorunbe, to explore collaboration aimed at advancing sports digitalisation and strengthening Nigeria’s emerging e-sports ecosystem.

During the engagement, Olopade highlighted the Commission’s determination to integrate technology into sports development, describing digital innovation as a key driver of future growth in the sector. He noted that partnership with the NCC would significantly improve connectivity, create new sponsorship opportunities, and enhance Nigeria’s ability to compete on the global e-sports stage.

According to him, stronger involvement from the private sector especially through corporate social responsibility initiatives will be vital in building a modern sports environment powered by digital infrastructure. He explained that improved internet access and the establishment of world-class gaming facilities would provide Nigerian players with the tools needed to compete effectively in international tournaments.

Responding, Olorunbe expressed the NCC’s strong support for the initiative, describing e-sports as a natural evolution of traditional sports and a sector with significant economic prospects. He emphasized that the collaboration would extend beyond athletic competition to include youth empowerment, technological innovation, and strengthening Nigeria’s global digital identity.

Olorunbe also advocated the creation of gaming hubs across the country, expansion of broadband capacity, and supportive regulatory policies that would help unlock the growing pool of talent in Nigeria’s digital gaming community.

Both organisations agreed to establish a joint technical working group that will design a comprehensive roadmap for sports digitalisation. The proposed framework is expected to include plans for structured e-sports leagues as well as strategies to attract corporate sponsorship and investment into the sector.

The emerging partnership between the NSC and NCC is widely viewed as a significant milestone, representing one of the first coordinated efforts between Nigeria’s sports and telecommunications regulators to develop a sustainable digital sports economy and position the country as a competitive force in the global e-sports industry.
