The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has warned motorists and members of the public against assaulting road safety personnel, reiterating the Corps’ zero-tolerance stance on attacks against its operatives following the arrest of a suspect involved in the assault of an FRSC patrol team in Edo State.

In a statement issued by the Corps Public Education Officer, Deputy Corps Commander Osondu Ohaeri, the FRSC said the incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, April 11, 2026, when a patrol team from RS5.1 Edo Sector Command flagged down a vehicle for seat belt violation.

According to the statement, the driver allegedly fled the scene with an FRSC marshal still engaged in enforcement before mobilising a group of commercial tricycle operators who attacked the officers.

During the attack, the marshal was forcefully pushed into a gutter and assaulted, while the team leader was also physically attacked. The suspect later escaped from the scene.

The Corps said the suspect was eventually tracked and apprehended through collaboration with security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS).

The suspect has since confessed to the crime and expressed remorse for his actions.

The Corps Marshal commended the professionalism and swift response of the security agencies that facilitated the arrest, noting that assault on law enforcement personnel constitutes a serious criminal offence.

While acknowledging the suspect’s remorse, Mohammed stressed that due legal process would be followed and appropriate action taken to serve as a deterrent to others.

He urged members of the public to cooperate with FRSC operatives during enforcement activities and make use of established channels for complaints or redress instead of resorting to violence.

The FRSC also disclosed that the injured marshal is currently in stable condition and receiving appropriate medical care.

The Corps reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring safer roads across the country while upholding the rule of law and safeguarding its personnel, adding that it would continue working with relevant stakeholders to identify, apprehend and prosecute perpetrators of violence against its operatives.
