The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has commended the efforts of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) in supporting the welfare of police families, describing their work as critical to strengthening the morale and stability of officers serving across the country.
The IGP gave the commendation on Tuesday when he received the POWA President, Olufumilola Disu, and her delegation during a courtesy visit to the Force Headquarters.
Speaking during the meeting, the police chief described the visit as a strong demonstration of solidarity and appreciation for the sacrifices made by police officers and their families. He praised POWA for its longstanding role in promoting the welfare of officers’ households and providing support structures that help families cope with the demanding nature of police service.
Disu noted that the association has continued to play a significant role in cushioning the rigours of the profession by nurturing officers’ children and promoting peaceful and supportive home environments that ultimately enable officers to perform their duties more effectively.
The visit also highlighted POWA’s renewed commitment to strengthening its welfare-driven agenda under its current leadership. According to the delegation, the association is embarking on several initiatives aimed at improving the lives of police families nationwide, including the launch of a free eye care programme for members and their families.
Other key aspects of the repositioning agenda include the expansion of welfare programmes, the provision of mental and emotional support services, economic empowerment initiatives for members, youth development programmes, and activities designed to promote unity and cohesion among police families across the country.
The Inspector-General encouraged members of the association to deepen collaboration and sustain their commitment to programmes that enhance the well-being of police officers and their families, stressing that strong family support systems remain essential to effective policing.
The visit reaffirmed the enduring partnership between the police leadership and POWA in advancing welfare initiatives aimed at improving the living conditions and overall well-being of officers and their families across Nigeria.
