The Nigerian Navy has handed over two suspected stowaways to the Department of State Services (DSS) as part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal maritime migration and enhance security within Nigeria’s waterways.
The Commander of NNS BEECROFT, Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, disclosed that the suspects were transferred to DSS officer DSI Eneji Emmanuel Ochokpa of the Lagos Ports/Marine Command in Apapa for further investigation.
He explained that stowaways are individuals who secretly board vessels with the intention of travelling abroad without proper authorisation, describing the act as both illegal and life-threatening.
The suspects were reportedly discovered in the early hours of Thursday, March 19, 2026, during routine security checks by naval personnel while the vessel was underway around the Lagos Fairway Buoy. They were found hiding in the rudder compartment of the ship—a highly dangerous location due to extreme conditions at sea.
Following their discovery, the individuals were safely extracted and taken to NNS BEECROFT for preliminary investigations. They were identified as Abdullahi Yakubu, 36, described as a repeat offender, and Omoniyi Afotona, 25. Both are believed to have gained unauthorised access to the vessel at Apapa Port before its departure.
Commodore Adams-Aliu used the opportunity to caution young Nigerians against attempting irregular migration through such risky means. He called on parents, guardians, and community leaders to sensitise youths on the dangers and legal implications of stowing away on ships, urging those with migration aspirations to pursue lawful channels.
He reaffirmed the Navy’s commitment, under the leadership of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Idi Abbas, to maintaining a highly professional force dedicated to protecting Nigeria’s maritime domain, safeguarding national interests, and supporting broader security operations.
