The Nigerian Navy has recorded another major breakthrough under Operation DELTA SENTINEL with the interception of a large consignment of illegally refined petroleum products and the arrest of eight suspected oil thieves in Rivers State.

The operation, which took place across the Degema, Ogbogoro and Ogbologo general areas, was carried out following credible intelligence on ongoing illicit refining and transportation activities within the region.

According to a statement issued by the Director of Naval Information, Abiodun Folorunsho, personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship PATHFINDER deployed an Anti-Crude Oil Theft patrol team that successfully intercepted two wooden boats laden with about 44,000 litres of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).

Folorunsho explained that the swift operation led to the arrest of eight suspects directly linked to the illegal consignment, while several other armed accomplices fled the scene upon sighting the advancing naval patrol team.

He noted that the arrested suspects, along with the seized products, are currently in naval custody and will be handed over to appropriate authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution in line with existing laws.

The Navy emphasized that the success of the operation is in line with the directive of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Idi Abbas, who has tasked operational commanders to intensify the fight against crude oil theft, illegal bunkering and other maritime crimes across Nigeria’s maritime domain.

Reaffirming its commitment, the Service stated that it will sustain the momentum of Operation DELTA SENTINEL through intelligence-driven operations, enhanced maritime patrols and strengthened inter-agency collaboration aimed at protecting Nigeria’s critical national assets and economic interests.
