The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Ridwan Disu, has praised journalists in the Federal Capital Territory for their contributions to public information and national development, while calling for deeper collaboration between the police and the media.
Disu made the remarks during the congress of the Nigeria Union of Journalists FCT Council held in Abuja on Saturday.
Addressing members of the union, the police chief described his relationship with journalists as one founded on mutual respect, professionalism and constructive engagement.
He stressed that members of the media should be treated with dignity as professionals who play a vital role in shaping public discourse and strengthening democratic governance.
According to him, journalists should never be viewed or treated as beggars, noting that their work remains essential to keeping citizens informed and holding institutions accountable.
The IGP also emphasised the importance of closer cooperation between the police and the media, explaining that a strong partnership would enhance effective communication on security matters and help build greater public confidence in law enforcement.
Disu further urged both police personnel and journalists to uphold high standards of conduct in the discharge of their duties, stressing that professionalism and integrity leave lasting impressions in society.
Responding, the Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Grace Ike, congratulated the IGP on his appointment and described him as a long-standing ally of the media.
She expressed optimism about his leadership of the Nigeria Police Force and assured him of the council’s readiness to work closely with the police in promoting balanced and responsible reporting on security issues.
Ike also disclosed that the Inspector-General would be invited as a special guest at the council’s 2026 Press Week celebration.
She reaffirmed the commitment of the NUJ FCT Council to advancing responsible journalism and supporting initiatives that strengthen security and governance within the Federal Capital Territory.
