The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Charles Anosike, has led a Nigerian delegation to the 5th Conference of the Network for Education and Research on Peace and Sustainability (NERPS), held from 4 to 7 March 2026 at the headquarters of the United Nations University in Tokyo, Japan.

The international conference, which brought together leading scholars, policymakers, and sustainability experts from across the world, focused on the role of technology in advancing multilateral cooperation for peace and sustainability.

The event commenced with a welcome address by the Rector of the United Nations University and United Nations Under-Secretary-General, Tshilidzi Marwala, who highlighted the growing importance of global partnerships and technological innovation in addressing contemporary global challenges.

Participants also received keynote presentations from the Executive Director of the Stockholm Environment Institute, Måns Nilsson, and the President of Reach Alternatives (REALs), Rumiko Seya, who both emphasised the urgent need for collaborative approaches to climate action, environmental sustainability, and global peace.

During the conference, Professor Anosike and members of the NiMet delegation participated in several parallel sessions addressing a wide range of global sustainability issues. The discussions focused on climate action, disaster resilience, migration, climate change mitigation, sustainable peace and security, sustainable agriculture, and environmental sustainability both on land and in marine ecosystems.

The NiMet team actively contributed to deliberations and expert reviews centred on climate governance, urban resilience, equitable climate justice, transboundary resource management, and emerging approaches for monitoring and predicting environmental changes.

Their participation enabled robust knowledge exchange with global stakeholders while strengthening partnerships with leading international institutions working in the fields of climate science, sustainability, and environmental governance.

Observers noted that the delegation’s contributions helped enrich discussions on climate action and sustainable development, while also reinforcing Nigeria’s presence and engagement within the global sustainability community.
