The Federal Government has called on all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to strictly adhere to the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF), emphasizing that compliance is essential to ensuring transparency, credibility, and disciplined fiscal management in Nigeria’s budgetary process.

In an official statement, Head of Information & Public Relations, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), Dewan Goshit, disclosed that the directive was issued by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Sen. George Akume, CON, during a courtesy visit by the management team of the Fiscal Responsibility Commission (FRC), led by its Executive Chairman, Victor Chinmerem Muruako, Esq., in Abuja.

Sen. Akume highlighted that strict compliance with the MTEF is pivotal to aligning public expenditure with national development priorities, ensuring predictability, coherence, and sustainability in budget planning. “The Medium-Term Expenditure Framework remains a critical instrument for anchoring annual appropriations on realistic macroeconomic assumptions and revenue forecasts,” he said. “Adherence by all MDAs safeguards the credibility and integrity of the national budget and strengthens public trust in our fiscal governance.”

The SGF also commended the FRC for its sustained oversight under the Fiscal Responsibility Act, acknowledging its efforts in promoting fiscal discipline, monitoring compliance across government tiers, and safeguarding public resources. He called on the Commission to continue strengthening its reporting, enforcement, and regulatory mechanisms to ensure a disciplined fiscal environment.

Sen. Akume further emphasized the importance of timely preparation and publication of audited financial statements, budget implementation reports, and other statutory disclosures, noting that consistent and transparent financial management enhances investor confidence and reinforces macroeconomic stability. “Consistency and discipline in fiscal operations are essential to reducing leakages, optimizing scarce resources, and directing funds toward sectors that directly improve the welfare of our citizens,” he said.

Earlier, Executive Chairman of the FRC, Victor Muruako, expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his reform-driven leadership under the Renewed Hope Agenda, which provided the political backing necessary for the Commission’s work in enhancing regulatory oversight, enforcing fiscal responsibility principles, and safeguarding institutional independence. Muruako also acknowledged the support and guidance of the Office of the SGF throughout his tenure, which enabled the Commission to successfully implement reforms and strengthen compliance within government-owned enterprises.

The meeting underscored a shared commitment between the SGF and the FRC to promote transparency, accountability, and sustainable public finance management in Nigeria, with full adherence to the MTEF positioned as a cornerstone for achieving these objectives.
