President Bola Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.

The development was announced in a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who disclosed that President Tinubu received Egbetokun’s resignation letter earlier on Tuesday, in which the outgoing police chief cited pressing family considerations as the reason for his decision to step down.

President Tinubu expressed profound appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of distinguished service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation, commending his dedication, professionalism, and steadfast commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s internal security architecture during his tenure.

Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023, had been serving a four-year term scheduled to conclude in June 2027, in line with the amended provisions of the Police Act. His tenure witnessed sustained efforts aimed at reinforcing policing structures and enhancing operational effectiveness across the country.

In announcing the new appointment, the President said the decision to elevate Disu was informed by the prevailing security challenges confronting the nation and was taken in accordance with extant laws and established legal guidance.

President Tinubu expressed confidence that Disu’s extensive experience, operational depth, and demonstrated leadership capacity would provide steady and focused direction for the Nigeria Police Force at this critical time.

The statement further noted that, in compliance with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, the President would convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council shortly to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police, after which his name would be transmitted to the National Assembly for confirmation by the Senate.

President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to enhancing national security, strengthening institutional capacity, and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and fully equipped to discharge its constitutional responsibilities of safeguarding lives and property across the country.
