The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has charged store officers of the Scheme to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, transparency, and accountability in the management of government property, warning that lapses could undermine service delivery and public trust.
He gave the charge during the 2026 NYSC Store Officers’ Workshop held at Bolingo Xperia Hotel in Abuja, where he emphasised the strategic importance of efficient store administration to the overall success of the Scheme’s operations nationwide.
According to a statement signed by the NYSC Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, the Director-General, whose address was delivered by the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Mr Nura Umar, urged the officers to embrace prudence, integrity, and strict adherence to established procedures in the discharge of their duties.
He stressed that accurate record-keeping, proper documentation, and compliance with inventory management policies and administrative regulations are essential components of effective storekeeping and institutional efficiency.
The NYSC helmsman assured participants of management’s commitment to continuous staff development through regular capacity-building initiatives aimed at improving performance and ensuring seamless operational efficiency across all formations.
He reminded the officers that, as custodians of government assets, they bear significant responsibility in safeguarding public resources and must avoid negligence in the handling and utilisation of such assets.
“In the National Youth Service Corps, store management remains indispensable to the successful implementation of our programmes at Orientation Camps, State Secretariats, Area Offices and the National Directorate Headquarters,” Nafiu said.
He explained that corps members’ kits, camp equipment, office supplies, and other operational materials must be properly received, documented, stored, and issued in line with approved guidelines, noting that any failure in these processes could negatively affect programme implementation and weaken public confidence in the Scheme.
In her opening remarks, the Acting Director of General Services, Mrs Yetunde Baderinwa, described the workshop as an important forum for strengthening professional competence and promoting modern best practices in store management.
She noted that the training would equip participants with the knowledge and skills required to improve inventory control, enhance accountability, and ensure efficient management of NYSC resources.
The workshop, themed “Efficient Store Keeping: A Pillar of Accountability and Service Delivery in NYSC,” brought together store officers from NYSC formations across the 36 states of the federation, the Federal Capital Territory Secretariat, and the National Directorate Headquarters.
The training forms part of the Scheme’s broader efforts to strengthen internal systems, improve transparency, and enhance operational efficiency as it continues to implement its mandate of national service and youth development.
