Former Chief of Army Staff and Nigeria’s immediate past Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai (retd), has paid a heartfelt tribute to his predecessor, Lieutenant General Azubuike Ihejirika (retd), on the occasion of his 70th birthday, describing him as an exceptional leader whose mentorship shaped a generation of military commanders.
In a goodwill message released in Abuja on Friday, Buratai extolled Ihejirika as a distinguished soldier, statesman, and visionary commander whose leadership left a lasting imprint on the Nigerian Army. He described the celebrant as an “architect of leadership,” whose professional guidance and example helped groom many senior officers who later assumed critical national responsibilities.
Reflecting on his own career, Buratai acknowledged that his rise through the ranks was profoundly influenced by the confidence and opportunities given to him under Ihejirika’s leadership. He recalled his early command appointment at Headquarters 2 Brigade and his subsequent role as Commandant of the Nigerian Army School of Infantry, noting that both positions proved pivotal in preparing him for higher responsibilities.
“These opportunities were not mere appointments; they were strategic investments in leadership,” Buratai stated, emphasizing that the exposure and trust he received formed a strong foundation for his future service.
He added that the professional mentorship and leadership discipline he acquired under Ihejirika played a decisive role in his eventual emergence as Chief of Army Staff and later his appointment as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Republic of Benin.
Buratai further praised Ihejirika’s command style, describing it as professional, pragmatic, and driven by mission objectives. According to him, Ihejirika led with clarity of purpose and set high standards of excellence that continue to influence leadership culture within the Army.
“At seventy, General Ihejirika has earned the right to reflect on a legacy secured,” Buratai said, offering prayers for continued good health, peace, and fulfillment for the retired General as he marks the milestone.
He concluded by expressing deep appreciation for Ihejirika’s enduring mentorship, describing himself as a grateful mentee and successor, and highlighting the strong bonds of professional respect and guidance that define the Nigerian Army’s leadership tradition.
