The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria has strongly rejected recent allegations claiming that Chinese companies are engaging in illegal mining activities in Nigeria and allegedly paying protection money to militia groups.
In a firm statement, the Embassy’s spokesperson described the accusations which originated from a bill introduced by some U.S. congressmen and were subsequently reported in sections of the media as “completely baseless” and misleading. The statement demanded that media outlets immediately cease circulating what it called false information that harms China-Nigeria relations.
According to the spokesperosn, the Embassy has consistently emphasised that Chinese companies and citizens operating overseas are required to abide strictly by the laws and regulations of host countries, including Nigeria.
“We have zero tolerance for any enterprise involved in illegal or criminal activities,” he said, stressing that “the overwhelming majority of Chinese mining companies in Nigeria have an exemplary record of compliance with Nigerian laws and regulations, actively giving back to local communities, fulfilling their social responsibilities, protecting the natural environment, and making positive contributions to local economic development and employment.”
The spokesperson reiterated that the Chinese side respects Nigeria’s sovereignty and supports the Federal Government’s efforts to strengthen mining governance in accordance with the law. He said the Embassy maintains close communication and cooperation with relevant Nigerian authorities to that end.
He also insisted that Chinese mining firms in Nigeria have themselves been victims of terrorist activities, and that they are willing to cooperate with the Nigerian government to safeguard national security.
“The Chinese side stands ready to work together with Nigeria to further strengthen mining cooperation and governance, promote the healthy, orderly and sustainable development of China-Nigeria mining cooperation, safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of enterprises from both sides, and bring benefits to the peoples of both countries,” the statement said.
The spokesperson urged relevant parties to stop spreading “rumours and slander” that undermine friendly cooperation, and called on Nigerian media and stakeholders to view China-Nigeria mining cooperation “in an objective and fair manner,” without allowing “individuals with ulterior motives” to exploit the situation and damage the longstanding bilateral relationship.
