The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the protection of civilians following reports alleging that non-combatants were affected during an air operation conducted on Sunday, 25 January 2026, in Kurigi Village, Kontokoro District, Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State.
In response to the reports, the NAF expressed deep concern over the alleged loss of lives and injuries, acknowledging the gravity of the situation and sympathising with all individuals and families who may have been impacted by the incident.
In an official statement signed by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the Service explained that the protection of non-combatants remains central to its operational doctrine and mission execution.
According to the statement, the NAF has, over the past year, consistently implemented its Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response – Action Plan (CHMR-AP), a comprehensive framework designed to embed civilian protection considerations into every phase of air operations.
The Air Force noted that the action plan strengthens operational planning, enhances training of personnel, refines engagement procedures, and establishes multiple safeguards aimed at preventing and minimising civilian harm, even in complex and fluid operational environments.
“In line with this commitment, the NAF has activated a Civilian Harm Accident and Investigation (CHAI) team to commence an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the reported incident,” the statement said.
The Service explained that the CHAI team will thoroughly examine all aspects of the operation, including mission planning, target verification, weapon employment, and post-strike assessments, to establish the facts surrounding the reported occurrence.
The Nigerian Air Force stressed that the investigation will be guided by the core principles of accountability, responsibility, and transparency, assuring Nigerians that any findings will be treated with utmost seriousness.
Air Commodore Ejodame further stated that the NAF remains resolute in its determination to take responsibility where required, implement necessary corrective measures, and continuously improve its processes in order to further strengthen civilian protection.
The Air Force also reaffirmed that, while it remains fully committed to defending the nation against threats to peace and security, such operations are conducted with professionalism, restraint, and strict adherence to international humanitarian law and rules of engagement.
The statement added that maintaining the trust and confidence of the Nigerian people remains paramount to the Service, and that safeguarding innocent lives will always be a guiding priority in the execution of its constitutional mandate.
The NAF called for patience as the investigation progresses and reiterated its assurance that the outcome will inform ongoing efforts to enhance operational standards and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
