The Nigerian military has announced plans to court-martial several of its officers over allegations of plotting to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

In a statement on Monday, Director of Defence Information, Major General Sumaila Uba, confirmed that investigations into the matter, which first led to the arrest of sixteen officers in October 2025 for acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations, have now been concluded and the findings forwarded to the relevant superior authority.

According to Major General Uba, officers found to have cases to answer will be formally arraigned before a military judicial panel to face trial under the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) wishes to inform the public that the comprehensive investigation, conducted according to established military procedures, has identified a number of officers allegedly involved in plotting to overthrow the government, conduct that is inconsistent with the ethics, values, and professional standards expected of our personnel,” the statement said.

He added that the proceedings are strictly disciplinary, aimed at preserving order, discipline, and operational effectiveness within the military. The AFN emphasized its commitment to upholding the highest standards of professionalism, loyalty, and respect for constitutional authority while ensuring fairness and due process.
