The Nigeria Police Force has announced the resumption of the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy, citing growing security concerns and the increasing misuse of unauthorised tinted vehicles for criminal activities across the country.

The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this in an official statement, explaining that the decision followed a careful review of prevailing security realities and the need to strengthen public safety measures. According to the Police, enforcement of the policy will officially resume on 2 January 2026.

Clarifying the legal position, the Police stressed that there was no court order restraining the Force from enforcing existing laws regulating the use of tinted glass on vehicles. However, enforcement was earlier suspended in the interest of responsibility, transparency and public convenience, to allow motorists sufficient time to regularise their documentation and complete the permit application process without undue pressure.

The statement noted that recent trends have revealed a disturbing rise in criminal activities carried out with the aid of vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass. Criminal elements, including organised gangs, were said to have exploited the enforcement gap to conceal their identities and perpetrate offences such as armed robbery, kidnapping and other violent crimes.

In view of these developments, the Police said the resumption of enforcement has become both necessary and urgent as a proactive step to curb crime and protect communities nationwide.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, reassured members of the public that the renewed enforcement would be conducted with professionalism, civility and strict adherence to the rule of law. He emphasised that the rights of citizens would be respected at all times, adding that the Force remains committed to working with stakeholders to promote public safety and maintain internal security.

The Police also advised motorists who require tinted glass permits to apply through approved channels and ensure that their vehicles fully comply with legal requirements ahead of the resumption date.

The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging public cooperation as it implements measures aimed at strengthening national security and crime prevention.
