Nigeria and Saudi Arabia have formalised a new defence cooperation framework with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening military ties between both countries. The agreement, signed by authorised representatives of the two governments, is expected to enhance Nigeria’s defence architecture and open new avenues for training, intelligence sharing and operational collaboration.

According to an official statement issued by the Assistant Director of Information and Public Relations, Enderline Chukwu, the Honourable Minister of State for Defence, H.E. Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, MON, signed on behalf of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was represented by the Assistant Minister of Defence for Executive Affairs, Dr. Khaled H. Al-Biyari.

Speaking shortly after the signing ceremony, Dr. Matawalle described the agreement as a significant milestone for both nations. He noted that the MoU had been in development for some time, and its successful conclusion marked a strategic step forward in strengthening Nigeria’s defence outlook and improving the capacity of its armed forces.

The MoU will remain in force for an initial term of five years and may be reviewed or renewed for an additional five-year period. It also provides that either party may terminate the agreement by giving a minimum of three months’ written notice through diplomatic channels.

Under the framework, both countries will cooperate in key defence and military areas, including training, joint exercises, technical assistance, logistics, intelligence exchange and other mutually agreed activities. The Ministry of Defence stated that these collaborative efforts are expected to improve Nigeria’s operational effectiveness, expand opportunities for professional military development and enhance the country’s capabilities in counter-terrorism, counter-insurgency and internal security operations.

The Ministry affirmed that the agreement represents a practical and forward-looking instrument that will contribute to Nigeria’s long-term security, stability and ongoing defence modernisation drive.
