The Federal Government has expressed its readiness to collaborate with the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) in boosting local production of pharmaceutical products as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.
According to an official statement issued by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), Segun Imohiosen, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, CON, gave the assurance when he received a delegation from the PSN led by its National President, Pharmacist Ayuba Tanko Ibrahim, during a courtesy visit in Abuja. The SGF was represented at the meeting by the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Mohammed Danjuma Sanusi.
Speaking on behalf of the SGF, Sanusi reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to enhancing the well-being of citizens through the provision of accessible and affordable healthcare services. He noted that increased domestic production of pharmaceutical products remains a key priority and emphasised that government is open to meaningful partnerships with the PSN to achieve this objective.
He highlighted the critical role of funding in scaling up pharmaceutical production and assured the Society of the government’s willingness to provide incentives and create an enabling environment that would allow PSN members to access necessary financial support, including through donor partnerships and development programmes.
Earlier in his remarks, the National President of the PSN, Pharmacist Ayuba Tanko Ibrahim, explained that the visit was partly to inform the SGF about the Society’s plans for its centenary celebration scheduled for 27 March 2027. He said the milestone anniversary would feature a wide range of activities, including public enlightenment campaigns, health outreaches, lectures, and sustained engagement with policymakers, all designed to deepen Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP) across the country and elevate public understanding of pharmaceutical services.
Pharmacist Ibrahim also disclosed that the Society is preparing to launch a N5 billion Endowment Fund aimed at promoting pharmacy education and supporting research that would drive pharmaceutical development to new frontiers. He emphasised that the Fund would serve as a catalyst for innovation, capacity building, and improved service delivery within the nation’s pharmaceutical ecosystem.
