In an unexpected leadership transition at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu has handed over the Commission’s leadership to National Commissioner May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will now serve as Acting National Chairman.
The announcement was made by Yakubu on Tuesday during a high-level meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Agbamuche-Mbu, the longest-serving National Commissioner by virtue of her appointment date, assumes the position at a pivotal moment for Nigeria’s electoral process, as INEC faces growing calls for sweeping reforms and renewed confidence in its operations ahead of future elections.
Further information on the transition and subsequent developments is expected soon.
