The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has expressed outrage over disturbing reports alleging that Nigerian girls being held in deportation camps in New Delhi, India, were subjected to rape, assault, and the forced administration of unknown substances.
In a strongly worded statement issued by NiDCOM’s Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the Commission described the alleged abuses as “heartbreaking and unacceptable,” stressing that they constitute grave violations of the dignity and fundamental rights of Nigerian citizens.
According to accounts and videos shared by some of the victims, the young women reportedly endured sexual violence, physical abuse, intimidation, and degrading treatment under the guise of immigration enforcement. The Commission further expressed alarm over claims that corrupt middlemen and certain groups have been exploiting the plight of the detainees, subjecting them to extortion and worsening their already dire situation.
Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, strongly condemned the reports, warning that Nigerian citizens must never be treated as less than human. “Wherever they are in the world, Nigerians must not have their vulnerability exploited under the guise of immigration procedures,” she declared.
NiDCOM reassured the victims and their families that their plight would not be ignored. The Commission disclosed that it has already begun engaging with the Nigerian High Commission in India, relevant Indian authorities, and international human rights organizations to ascertain the veracity of the allegations and ensure immediate protective measures.
“We are determined to see that steps are taken without delay to safeguard the victims, provide them with medical and psychological support, and bring the perpetrators to justice,” the statement said.
The Commission urged the Government of India to launch an urgent investigation, shut down all channels of exploitation, and guarantee the safety and dignity of Nigerians within its territory.
“Our hearts go out to the young women and men enduring such traumatic experiences,” the statement added. “We stand in solidarity with them and affirm that Nigeria will never abandon its citizens in their time of need.”
NiDCOM pledged to follow up on the matter until justice is served and the dignity of every Nigerian abroad is safeguarded.
