The Federal Government has announced the cancellation of the 65th Independence Anniversary parade earlier scheduled to hold on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.

In an official statement signed by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), Segun Imohiosen, the government explained that the decision does not in any way diminish the significance of Nigeria’s milestone 65th Independence anniversary. It stressed that the administration remains committed to celebrating the historic occasion with dignity and enthusiasm.

Imohiosen clarified that while the parade would no longer hold, all other programmes lined up to commemorate the anniversary remain intact. “The cancellation is in no way a diminishment of the significance of this milestone anniversary, and the government remains committed to celebrating Nigeria’s 65th year of independence with dignity and enthusiasm. Accordingly, all other programmes slated for the Independence Anniversary will remain in effect,” the statement read.

The government expressed regret over any inconvenience the cancellation may cause to Nigerians, members of the diplomatic community, and invited guests, while appealing for continued understanding and support. It further urged citizens to rally behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reform agenda aimed at building a stronger and greater Nigeria.

“The Federal Government appreciates the understanding, support and cooperation of all Nigerians, members of the diplomatic community, and invited guests, and urges Nigerians to support the reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in making Nigeria a greater nation,” the statement concluded.
