The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for introducing the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) bus initiative, describing it as a significant step in cushioning the effects of fuel subsidy removal and easing transportation challenges across the country.
The NYSC helmsman gave the commendation at the National Directorate Headquarters in Maitama, Abuja, while receiving a 40-seater CNG bus donated to the Scheme by the Presidential Initiative for Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG) in collaboration with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL).
According to an official statement signed by the NYSC Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, General Nafiu, who was accompanied by members of the Scheme’s top management, expressed deep appreciation to Pi-CNG and NNPCL for what he described as a timely and thoughtful intervention.
He assured that the bus would be put to judicious use and maintained properly for the benefit of corps members and the smooth running of NYSC operations. However, the DG appealed for more of the CNG buses to be deployed to other formations of the NYSC nationwide, stressing that such support would significantly reduce the transportation burdens faced by corps members in their daily activities.
“Providing these buses across the country will go a long way in ameliorating transportation challenges for corps members as they go about their routine activities of fostering national unity, integration, and contributing to the all-round economic growth of Nigeria,” General Nafiu said.
Earlier in his remarks while presenting the 40-seater bus, the Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Pi-CNG, Barrister Ismael Ahmed, explained that the donation was in fulfilment of the promise made by President Tinubu to cushion the impact of subsidy removal on Nigerians, with particular focus on sustainable energy and affordable transportation.
The CNG initiative is part of the administration’s broader “Renewed Hope” agenda aimed at reducing dependence on petrol, cutting emissions, and providing cheaper alternatives for Nigerians.
