The International Day of Peace, observed annually on September 21, is a global reminder of the urgent need for dialogue, unity, and non-violence in a world facing complex security and humanitarian challenges. In Nigeria, where communities continue to grapple with the effects of insurgency and displacement, this year’s commemoration was marked by a symbolic gesture of solidarity as the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), in partnership with Rapid Broadcasting Network (Rapid TV), organized a humanitarian outreach at the Durumi Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp in Abuja.
The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, reaffirmed the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s commitment to peacebuilding, security, and humanitarian support during the event. Represented by the Chief of Defence Civil-Military Relations, Rear Admiral Olusanya Bankole, the CDS noted that the outreach was not only about distributing relief items but also about strengthening the bond between the military and civilian communities while promoting the ideals of peace and national unity.
“Without peace and security, there can be no meaningful development. This outreach is not just about distributing food and relief items, but about educating our people on the importance of keeping their communities safe and peaceful,” General Musa stated. He stressed that peace is the foundation for stability and growth, adding that the Armed Forces would continue to partner with communities and stakeholders to build trust and create a safe environment for all Nigerians.
The CDS also underscored the vital role of women in sustaining peace, explaining that the decision to prioritize women in the distribution of relief materials reflected their unique position in family life, child upbringing, and instilling values. He urged parents to guide their children with strong moral and religious teachings, warning against indulgence in crime, violence, or drug abuse.
Delivering remarks on behalf of the Managing Director of Rapid TV, Faith Dafe, the Acting General Manager, North Central, Mr. Godwin Amunde, commended the Defence Headquarters for its consistent commitment to supporting vulnerable communities. He explained that Rapid TV’s participation was driven by the need to amplify the voices of displaced persons and raise awareness about their resilience. “IDPs have faced unimaginable challenges, forced to flee their homes due to conflict and insecurity. Yet, they remain resilient. Today, as we mark the International Day of Peace under the theme Act Now for a Peaceful World, we reaffirm the role of media and institutions in promoting peace, unity, and mutual understanding,” he said.
The Chairman of the Durumi IDP Camp, Ibrahim Ahmadu, expressed appreciation for the intervention, noting that beyond the relief provided, such gestures restore dignity and offer displaced families hope. “These efforts show that we are not forgotten and that Nigeria stands with us in our struggles,” he remarked warmly.
The outreach featured the distribution of food, household provisions, and educational materials to women and children, alongside peace education sessions delivered by military officers, including Flight Lieutenant Ayaka David Kotso. The event culminated in collective prayers for Nigeria’s peace and unity, symbolizing the nation’s resolve to overcome conflict through solidarity and shared responsibility.
By bringing relief and hope to displaced families while reaffirming the centrality of peace, the Defence Headquarters and Rapid TV underscored the importance of civil-military cooperation in shaping a more inclusive and peaceful Nigeria.
