By Nkechi Eze

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has congratulated Captain Kelechi Ndukwe, a distinguished Nigerian-American officer, on his promotion to Commodore in the United States Navy.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, September 19, 2025, the Head of Media and Public Relations of NIDCOM, Gabriel Odu, said the Commission under the leadership of Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa was proud of Ndukwe’s historic achievement. He has been appointed Commodore of Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 60 and Commander of Task Force (CTF) 65, headquartered in Rota, Spain.

According to NIDCOM, the appointment is not only a significant personal milestone for Commodore Ndukwe but also a moment of pride for Nigeria, the international naval community, and Nigerians in the diaspora. In his new role, he will oversee U.S. Navy destroyer operations across Europe, Africa, and the Mediterranean, reinforcing maritime security and fostering international collaboration.

Commodore Ndukwe has earned a distinguished reputation in the U.S. Navy. In April 2021, he made history as the first Nigerian-American to command a U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer, the USS Halsey (DDG-97). His remarkable career trajectory, from the son of Nigerian immigrants to one of the highest-ranking officers in the American naval service, has been described as a testament to resilience, discipline, and excellence.

While celebrating the promotion, NIDCOM emphasized its commitment to recognizing and supporting Nigerians abroad who exemplify hard work, integrity, and dedication while making meaningful contributions globally. “The promotion of Commodore Ndukwe symbolises the diaspora community’s positive influence and the boundless potential of Nigerians around the world,” the statement read.

The Commission once again extended its warm congratulations to Commodore Ndukwe, describing his elevation as an inspiration not only to Nigerians at home and abroad but also to the wider global community.
