The Defence Headquarters has announced that the Fourth Edition of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Unity Basketball Championship for the South-West Zone will take place in Lagos from 30 September to 5 October 2025. The prestigious sporting event will be staged at the National Stadium and Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, and promises to blend competition, entertainment, and national cohesion.

In an official statement, the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, disclosed that the annual championship is one of the non-kinetic strategies of the Armed Forces of Nigeria aimed at strengthening national security by promoting unity, discipline, and teamwork among Nigerian youths. He explained that beyond the courts, the tournament is designed to instill values of peace, resilience, and nation-building through the power of sports.

This year’s edition will see 12 elite male basketball teams drawn from across the South-West and neighbouring states, including a military team, competing for honours. In addition to the main fixtures, spectators will be treated to veterans’ exhibition games, halftime entertainment, and special recognition awards. Outstanding players and teams will be rewarded with cash prizes, medals, trophies, and certificates, while the coveted Most Valuable Player (MVP) award will also be presented.

According to the CDS, the objectives of the tournament goes beyond basketball. “The Unity Basketball Tournament is more than just a game; it is a platform to unite communities, inspire the youth, and reinforce the values of teamwork and discipline. Through non-kinetic approaches, we aim to promote a stronger, more united Nigeria.”

The championship also aims to engage young people in productive activities, steering them away from social vices, while providing a platform to identify and nurture emerging basketball talents who could represent Nigeria on international stages. Equally, it will strengthen civil-military relations through sportsmanship and fair play.

The grand finale and closing ceremony will feature an exhibition game by veteran players, musical performances, and the official presentation of trophies and medals to outstanding athletes and teams. The Defence Headquarters has extended invitations to the public, sports enthusiasts, and the media to be part of what it described as a thrilling fusion of sports, entertainment, and unity in Lagos.

For media and press accreditation, organisers advised that interested journalists and media houses contact Olumide Oyedeji at +234 803 702 0008 or Abdullahi Mohammed Lawal at +234 802 300 2930.
