By Dahiru Abu Mawashi
I carry in my blood the stories of two ancestral rivals whose legacies shaped the history of Katsina. On my paternal side flows the royal dignity of the Fulani Emirate, and on my maternal side runs the fiery courage of a celebrated warrior clan. Together, they form a heritage of both crown and sword, of authority and battlefield valor.
The Crown – The Line of Muhammadu Dikko
From my father’s side, I descend from the Fulani dynasty of Katsina. My grandfather’s elder brother was none other than Emir Muhammadu Dikko (1906–1944) the illustrious emir who steered Katsina through the turbulence of colonial rule and laid the foundations of modernization. He is remembered as a man of wisdom, diplomacy, and foresight, who balanced tradition with reform. His reign remains a golden chapter in the history of Katsina.
The Sword – The Line of Danwaire
From my mother’s side, I trace lineage to the legendary Danwaire, a warrior and warlord of great renown. He was my maternal grandfather’s elder brother, celebrated in lore as a fearless commander and strategist. Danwaire embodied the spirit of the battlefield strength, courage, and loyalty, earning his place in the chronicles of Katsina as one of its remarkable defenders.
A Heritage United
Thus, I stand as a product of two ancestral houses once seen as rivals, the emir’s palace and the warrior’s camp. One symbolizes leadership, justice, and statecraft; the other represents courage, sacrifice, and martial prowess.
In my own journey of service to Nigeria in the infantry corps of the Nigerian Army and has served in operation Harmony IV( war between Nigeria and Cameroon in Bakassi Peninsula), Operation Lafiya Dole ( counter terrorism and counterinsurgency against Boko Haram and ISWAP in Northeast Nigeria), Operation MESSA II Zaki Biam ( CTCOIN against militants in Taraba and Benue states), Operation flush out III, Operation restore hope, operation Pulo Shield and operation Delta safe in Niger Delta (against CTCOIN and internal security operations against insurgents, militants nd economic saboteurs. I am now serving in Defence Media Operations and military diplomacy, I see the convergence of these legacies. Like Muhammadu Dikko, I strive for diplomacy, dialogue, and leadership; like Danwaire, I embrace courage, resilience, and the warrior’s spirit.
Conclusion
This dual heritage is more than family history; it is a call to service. It reminds me that I must balance wisdom with strength, diplomacy with courage, and tradition with innovation, carrying forward the legacies of my ancestors in the service of peace, unity, and justice.
