Nigeria and Brazil deepened their cultural and historical ties on Monday as prominent voices, including Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka, and Central Bank Governor, Yemi Cardoso, extolled the significance of diaspora heritage exchanges at a landmark event in Brasília, Brazil.
The ceremony, held in the Legislative Chambers of the Brazilian capital as part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s State Visit to Brazil, celebrated cultural reconnection and heritage preservation under the theme of “Return to Africa.”
In an official statement signed by Gabriel Odu of the Media and Public Relations Unit, NiDCOM, Dabiri-Erewa commended President Tinubu and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for their commitment to strengthening cultural diplomacy and fostering Africa–Diaspora ties. She highlighted the importance of the Door of Return Festival in Lagos as a symbol of heritage dialogue and a bridge between Africa and its dispersed peoples.
“We are preparing to open the permanent Door of Return on October 18,” Dabiri-Erewa revealed. “It’s a symbolic gateway connecting the diaspora back to their motherland—historically, spiritually, and economically.”
Adding intellectual depth to the occasion, Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka described the “Return to Africa” project as a powerful act of remembrance and identity. “It is a symbolic return. Not about physically going back, but spiritually reconnecting with our African heritage, highlighting the resilience and strength of the African people,” Soyinka remarked.
For his part, Central Bank Governor Yemi Cardoso drew personal connections to the initiative, describing it as both cultural and practical. “As an Afro-Brazilian descendant, I take great pride in this moment of connection and mixing of peoples,” he said. He emphasized that the newly established direct flights between Nigeria and Brazil would be a “game changer” for business, tourism, and cultural exchanges between the two nations.
The Brazil event, spotlighting diaspora heritage and future cooperation, formed a key highlight of President Tinubu’s state visit, reinforcing Nigeria’s renewed commitment to global diaspora engagement.
