The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has underscored the importance of effective record keeping and data management as critical enablers of operational efficiency, strategic decision-making, and accountability within the Nigerian Army.
In an official statement signed by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, the Army Chief delivered this charge at the opening ceremony of the Army Headquarters Department of Military Secretary Data Management and Record-Keeping Seminar 2025. The three-day seminar, which opened at the Armed Forces Officers’ Mess, Asokoro, Abuja, is themed “Effective Data Management and Record Keeping: A Key Element in Ensuring a Professional Nigerian Army in a Digital Era.”
Represented by the Deputy Director General, Nigerian Army Future Heritage and Future Centre (Army), Major General Philip Eromosele, General Oluyede said the initiative reflects the Army’s forward-looking commitment to modern approaches to data management, anchored on digital transformation and best practices.
He explained that efficient data and records management are indispensable tools for monitoring progress, closing gaps, and addressing emerging security challenges in real time. He therefore urged all personnel to uphold high standards in data storage, document security, and digital archiving at every level of command.
“Accurate data management and efficient record keeping are not just administrative functions, they are operational necessities. They help us track our performance, anticipate challenges, and respond effectively to dynamic threats. By strengthening these systems, we drive efficiency and sustain the Nigerian Army’s readiness to defend our nation,” the COAS stressed.
General Oluyede reaffirmed the Army’s unwavering loyalty to its constitutional mandate and assured that the institution remains steadfast in safeguarding Nigeria’s security and unity. He further pledged the Army’s absolute loyalty to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Earlier in his welcome remarks, the Military Secretary (Army), Major General Everest Okoro, said the seminar was designed to foster excellence in data management and record-keeping practices in line with evolving global technological trends. He commended the COAS for his exceptional leadership and visionary guidance, which he said had provided clear direction for the Department’s objectives.
The seminar is expected to provide participants with the skills, insights, and frameworks necessary to adapt to the demands of a digital era, reinforcing the Nigerian Army’s drive towards professionalism, efficiency, and innovation.
