The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, on Tuesday led a high-powered rescue operation to the site of a train derailment along the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor near the Idda sub-station, assuring Nigerians of the government’s commitment to passenger safety.

The incident, which occurred shortly after 11 a.m., sparked immediate mobilisation of emergency teams. While no fatalities were recorded, seven passengers sustained varying degrees of injury. First responders provided prompt first aid at the scene before the victims were transferred to medical facilities for further treatment.

In a statement, NEMA’s Head of Press Unit, Manzo Ezekiel, disclosed that the response was a coordinated multi-agency operation spearheaded by NEMA with the active participation of the Nigerian military, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Immigration Service, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). Their swift action ensured the evacuation and safety of all passengers on board.

“The vigilance and rapid response of our security and emergency partners made it possible for the operation to proceed smoothly, preventing panic and ensuring that those injured received immediate care,” Ezekiel noted.

Also present at the site was the Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, who joined NEMA officials and security operatives in assessing the scene. Preliminary investigations into the cause of the derailment are already underway, with findings to be disclosed by the relevant authorities in due course.

Addressing passengers and responders at the scene, Mrs. Umar praised the synergy displayed by security agencies and emergency services, describing it as “a testament to Nigeria’s growing capacity to respond to transportation-related emergencies with professionalism and urgency.” She reassured the public that passenger safety on the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor remains a top national priority.

The Abuja–Kaduna rail line, one of Nigeria’s busiest passenger routes, has long been under close security watch following past incidents. Tuesday’s derailment once again placed the spotlight on the importance of proactive maintenance, rapid response, and inter-agency collaboration in ensuring the resilience of critical national infrastructure.

As investigations continue, NEMA pledged to provide further updates while commending the courage of passengers who remained calm throughout the ordeal.
