The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has urged Nigerian students to channel their use of the internet towards innovation, learning, and legitimate enterprise, stressing that responsible engagement with cyberspace is critical for personal growth and national development.

According to an official statement by the EFCC’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, Olukoyede gave the charge at the maiden edition of the Digital Festival of the Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Represented by the Head of the Cybercrime Section, Chief Superintendent of the EFCC, Ibrahim Musa, the EFCC boss addressed participants on the theme, “Proper Use of the Cyber World for Gain Getting”.

“This is your time and you must utilise it well. We have a lot in the cyber world and you must utilise it judiciously. To my surprise, instead of using it in a positive way, some are using it negatively,” he said, cautioning against the lure of cybercrime and peer pressure.

Olukoyede urged students to explore the positive applications of digital assets such as Bitcoin, while warning that illicit online activities not only damage Nigeria’s global image but also have far-reaching consequences for offenders. “When you are an ex-convict, it will limit you from foreign trips. There is no nation that can grow without the youths,” he noted.

He further drew attention to the provisions of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act (AFF Act), warning that violations carry severe legal and social repercussions.

Also speaking at the event, Jonah Emmanuel, Director of Excellence Academy, Business & Innovative Professional, encouraged students to use the internet to sell their ideas, create solutions, and earn legitimate income. “People like you can provide information via digital channels, offering solutions online and making lawful money,” he said.

The festival brought together technology experts and business innovators who shared insights aimed at inspiring young people to harness the digital space for positive impact, creativity, and nation-building.
