Residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and its surrounding states have been placed on high alert following a warning by the National Flood Early Warning System (FEWS) of potential heavy rainfall and flooding from July 31st to August 4th, 2025.
According to a statement issued by the Head of Public Affairs at the FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD), Nkechi Isa, about 11 high-risk locations across the capital city have been identified as vulnerable to flooding within the forecast period. These areas include Asokoro, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Damagaza, and Garki 1 & 2. Others are Guzape, Wuse 1 & 2, Gwarinpa, Nyanya, the Central Business District (CBD), and Kubwa.
In response to the alert, the Acting Director-General of FEMD, Engr Abdulrahman Mohammed, has activated the department’s Search and Rescue Team, placing them on red alert to mitigate any threat to life and property. He called on FCT residents to take the warning seriously and avoid risky behavior such as driving or walking through floodwaters.
“Please wait for the water to recede or use an alternative route,” Engr Abdulrahman advised. “We also urge residents to clear blocked drains to ensure the free flow of water, which is critical in preventing urban flooding.”
Engr Abdulrahman assured that FEMD was closely monitoring the situation and had put in place contingency plans to reduce the potential impact of the flooding in the Territory.
Meanwhile, FEWS also extended its flood warnings to neighbouring states. In Niger State, Suleja, Mashegu, Sarkin Pawa, and Rijau have been listed as high-risk areas. For Nasarawa State, the danger zones include Mararaba, Gidan Rogo, Wamba, Agima, Rukubi, and Odogbo.
Similarly, five locations in Kaduna State Zaria, Jaji, Kauru, Kachia, and Buruku are also expected to experience severe flooding in the coming days.
Residents in these locations are urged to remain vigilant, heed official advisories, and avoid flood-prone zones during the period of heavy rainfall. Emergency response agencies have assured that they are on standby to respond swiftly to any incidents, while citizens are encouraged to report emergencies promptly to the relevant authorities.
