In a display of tactical bravery and operational efficiency, troops of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), operating under Sector 2, have successfully repelled a coordinated attack by Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists on Koulfoua Island, in the Lake Chad region. The counter-offensive, launched on Tuesday, 15 July 2025, resulted in the elimination of a notorious Boko Haram commander identified as Amir Dumkei and five other terrorists.

This was disclosed in an official statement signed by the Chief Military Public Information Officer, MNJTF, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba. According to the statement, the terrorists initiated the assault in the early hours of the morning, targeting a military base near the bank of Koulfoua Island. However, the attackers were met with superior firepower and precise artillery response from MNJTF troops, forcing them into disarray and retreat.

“The timely and coordinated bombardment by our forces neutralized the terrorist commander along with five others,” Osoba noted, adding that several of the fleeing insurgents escaped with gunshot wounds. Troops also captured a large cache of arms and ammunition from the battlefield, including nine AK-47 rifles, three operational boats, and various rounds of ammunition.

The operation dealt a significant blow to the operational capabilities of the Boko Haram/ISWAP factions in the area, further weakening their hold and disrupting their movement across the Lake Chad Basin. Clearance operations and pursuit of the remaining terrorists are currently ongoing, as troops intensify efforts to secure the region.

Commending the troops for their gallantry, the Force Commander of the MNJTF, Major General Godwin Mutkut, praised their steadfast commitment to the mission of eradicating terrorism and restoring lasting peace to the Lake Chad region. He emphasized that the operation is a clear testament to the MNJTF’s resolve and capability to decisively counter terrorist threats wherever they arise.

“This victory is not just tactical; it is a reaffirmation of our collective determination to safeguard the people of the Lake Chad region and dismantle all networks of terror,” General Mutkut stated.

The successful repulsion of the attack on Koulfoua Island highlights the MNJTF’s ongoing operational momentum and strategic presence in one of the region’s most volatile corridors. It also reinforces the importance of joint multinational efforts in confronting insurgency and restoring stability across the affected territories.
