NEMA’s Preliminary Report On Building Collapse At Ochanja Market

Following the reported case of building collapse at Ochanja Market, Onitsha South LGA of Anambra State, a team of NEMA South East Zone led by the Zonal Coordinator Mrs Ngozi Echeazu visited the area for Search and Rescue Operations.

Findings:

The incident occurred
at exactly 6:30pm on 26/2/2024.

The affected building is a new building Plaza under construction with more than 120 shops

Many people are suspected trapped.

Already 21 persons have been rescued alive while 6 persons were found dead giving a total of 27 persons recovered. 

Some of rescued persons have been taken to different hospitals in Onitsha for treatment while the 6 persons that were confirmed dead have been taken to the mogue.

Excavation work is currently on-going.

Others in attendance are NEMA Operations Office Owerri, Anambra SEMA, Red Cross Society Onitsha Chapter, Ministry of Works, Several Construction Companies and other relevant stakeholders.

The State Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo and his entourage had visited the place early this morning

He assisted in mobilization of tractors and excavator to the scene of the incident.
