The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has pledged its support for a strategic partnership with the National Institute of Sports (NIS) in a bid to revive and reposition sports development in Nigeria. This commitment was made by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, during a courtesy visit by the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the NIS, Mr. Phillip Shaibu, to the DHQ on Tuesday, July 2, 2025.

In a statement signed by the Director, Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, General Musa emphasized the critical role of sports in fostering national development, enhancing physical well-being, and curbing youth involvement in criminality and insecurity. He lamented the current decline of sports in the country, noting that its neglect has broader implications on the nation’s socio-economic progress.

“Sports is a powerful tool for engaging the youth, promoting unity, and building a healthier, more secure society. Its current state is worrying, and reviving it must be seen as a national priority,” the CDS said. He urged the leadership of the NIS to work diligently towards restoring the image of sports in Nigeria and identifying practical ways to reintegrate it into the national consciousness.

Responding, Mr. Phillip Shaibu explained that his visit was intended to create awareness and build partnerships with key institutions such as the Armed Forces. He revealed that part of the goal was to explore collaborative opportunities, particularly in areas of training and coaching development, which the military can strongly support.

He further informed the CDS of the presidential directive to reactivate and re-energize sporting activities nationwide, adding that sports has the potential to rival other critical sectors in its contribution to national growth.

“Sports is not just recreation, it is development, security, education, and health combined. We are working to reposition it as a vital national asset,” Mr. Shaibu stated.

The proposed partnership between the DHQ and NIS is expected to leverage the strength, structure, and discipline of the Armed Forces to promote sports development, youth engagement, and national cohesion.
