The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Centre for Energy Research and Training (CERT), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, have entered into a strategic alliance aimed at strengthening environmental monitoring and enhancing national resilience through science-based solutions.

The collaboration was formalized with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by both institutions, with the Vice Chancellor of ABU, Professor Adamu Ahmed, leading the university’s delegation.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike, highlighted the importance of science and innovation in addressing national challenges. “Our collaboration with CERT-ABU will support joint research in climate science, enhance radiological monitoring including in aviation and foster climate-smart agricultural practices. Together, we are leveraging science to improve livelihoods and build national resilience,” he said.

Professor Anosike also emphasized the critical role of meteorological data in improving environmental safety, boosting agricultural productivity, and supporting early warning systems. He noted that the partnership would advance joint efforts in soil mapping, the downscaling of Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP), and capacity building across key sectors of the economy.

In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Adamu Ahmed, commended NiMet for its impactful contributions to agricultural development through the provision of timely and accurate weather and climate information. “Through this partnership with NiMet, we look forward to joint activities in radioactive materials mapping, technical training, and the development of tools and strategies to enhance environmental monitoring, food security, and public safety,” he stated.
