In a resounding call for patriotism and national service, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has emphasized the urgent need for committed and selfless citizens to champion Nigeria’s progress. Represented by the Chief of Defence Civil-Military Relations, Rear Admiral O.A. Bankole, the CDS made this assertion while addressing guests at the 7th edition of the Silent Heroes Awards, held on Friday, June 14, 2025, at the Wells Carlton Hotel, Abuja.
The event, organised to celebrate unsung Nigerians who have made exceptional contributions to society without seeking the limelight, brought together a wide array of dignitaries, honourees, and stakeholders in governance, business, and civil society.
Rear Admiral Bankole, speaking on behalf of General Musa, praised the initiative for honouring quiet achievers at a time when Nigeria urgently needs citizens who demonstrate integrity, commitment, and love for the nation in their private and professional spaces.
“Nigeria needs silent heroes now more than ever. We need patriotic citizens, those who do not blow their horns but serve diligently in their offices, homes, and communities,” he stated. “When I visited an IDP camp near Makurdi, we counted over 12,600 people, including about 6,000 children. These are the realities we face, not a full-fledged war, but a nation grappling with insecurity. That is why gatherings like this are important. We must know and appreciate those who are quietly helping to rebuild the nation.”
The CDS further emphasized that national development must adopt a “whole-of-government” approach, encouraging every citizen to see themselves as stakeholders in Nigeria’s progress.
“In your house, you are a government. In your office, you are a government. If you do the right things, it affects the citizenry positively. Nation-building starts from within,” he noted, urging all Nigerians to radiate whatever talents and opportunities God has given them for the good of the country.
The Silent Heroes Awards, founded and coordinated by Mrs. Ozioma Sonia Odita-Sunday, honours individuals who have made outstanding contributions in various fields, ranging from business and community service to security, education, and humanitarian work without public fanfare.
In her welcome address, Mrs. Odita-Sunday expressed gratitude to all partners, nominees, and supporters of the initiative, describing the ceremony as a “celebration of humility, service, and quiet excellence.” She paid tribute to those who have continued to believe in the vision, including major sponsors like United Bank for Africa (UBA), Zenith Bank, and the Managing Director of North China Construction, Dr. Osadebe Osakwe. She also acknowledged the event’s grand patron, His Royal Majesty Obi Prof. Epiphany Azinge, SAN, the Asagba of Asaba.
“The Silent Heroes Awards is more than a ceremony, it is a movement,” she said. “It reminds us that the most powerful impact often comes from those who do not seek applause. These are the heroes we celebrate tonight.”
The highlight of the evening was the presentation of awards to various distinguished recipients, including innovators, community builders, professionals, and entrepreneurs who have quietly transformed lives and institutions across Nigeria.
Rear Admiral Bankole concluded his remarks with warm congratulations to the organisers, particularly Mr. Sunday Odita and his wife, lauding their unwavering patriotic commitment. “It is this kind of dedication that strengthens nation-building. I bring you the goodwill and congratulations of the Chief of Defence Staff,” he said.
As preparations continue for the launch of a broader African edition, the Africa Heroes Awards, the Silent Heroes platform continues to shine a well-deserved light on individuals whose silent sacrifices and selfless service remain the bedrock of Nigeria’s collective progress.
