By Nkechi Eze

In a major breakthrough in the ongoing fight against drug trafficking, operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted sixty-six parcels of Loud, a potent strain of cannabis, cleverly disguised as green tea at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos.

According to an official signed statement by Femi Babafemi, Director, Media & Advocacy, the 62.2kg consignment was seized on Thursday, 5th June 2025, following credible intelligence that had prompted the agency to place the shipment under surveillance for over three weeks. The illicit cargo, which originated from Thailand via the United Arab Emirates aboard an Emirates Airlines flight, was eventually subjected to a joint examination with other stakeholders at the import shed of the airport’s cargo wing.

In a separate operation in Lagos, NDLEA officers on Monday, 2nd June, intercepted a staggering 1,665kg consignment of skunk along the Lekki-Ajah expressway. Two suspects, Gidado Abdulrasaq Ayinde and Obanla Oluwafemi, were arrested in connection with the seizure.

Meanwhile, in Kaduna State, operatives of the NDLEA on routine patrol along the Abuja-Kaduna expressway on Tuesday, 3rd June, apprehended 29-year-old Goodluck Nnaemeka in possession of 612 bottles of codeine-based syrup and 2,970 pills of flunitrazepam. That same day, a 52-year-old notorious drug dealer identified as Kabiru Musa, also known as “KB”, was arrested in the Kurmin Mashi area of the state. NDLEA had earlier recovered 25.7kg of skunk from his hideout.

Also in Edo State, NDLEA operatives intercepted 9kg of Loud hidden in the spare tyre compartment of an Audi station wagon car with registration number AAA 975 XU. The vehicle was driven by a 45-year-old suspect, Atari Israel, and was intercepted along the Auchi road.

In another significant crackdown in the Ikpoba Hill area of Benin City on Tuesday, 3rd June, two young women, identified as Favour Joy and Joy Igwe, were arrested with an alarming cache of assorted illicit drugs. Items recovered from them include 106.57kg of skunk, 1kg of Loud, 800 grams of Colorado, and 302 grams of methamphetamine.

In addition to enforcement actions, NDLEA’s War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) advocacy campaigns continued nationwide. WADA sensitization lectures were delivered to students and staff of institutions such as Sir Usman Nagogo College of Arabic and Islamic Studies, Katsina; Fountain of Knowledge International Academy, Abakaliki; Prof. Eyo Ita Municipal Model Primary School, Calabar; Millennium High School, Egbeda, Lagos; and Community Secondary School, Ichida Anaocha, Anambra State. In Bayelsa State, Zone 13 Command paid a WADA advocacy visit to the Amayanabo of Nembe Kingdom, Dr. Edmund Dakoru, Mingi XII.

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), commended the operatives involved in the series of arrests and seizures. He particularly praised the MMIA, Lagos, Kaduna, and Edo Commands for their vigilance, and lauded other state commands for their commitment to a balanced approach between reducing both the supply and demand of illicit drugs.

“These arrests and seizures demonstrate our unwavering resolve to confront and dismantle drug cartels, no matter how sophisticated their concealment methods may be,” Gen. Marwa asserted.
