The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) has advised residents of the FCT and neighbouring states to exercise utmost caution in the coming days as thunderstorms and heavy rainfall are expected to hit the region.

According to an official signed statement by the agency’s spokesperson, Nkechi Isa, the advisory follows early warnings issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET), which forecast thunderstorms and rainfall over parts of the FCT during the early evening hours of Sunday, June 8, 2025.

States bordering the FCT, including Kwara, Benue, and Plateau, are also projected to experience similar weather conditions, with additional forecasts indicating morning thunderstorms and rains across the FCT, Niger, Kogi, and Nasarawa States on Monday, June 9. Further precipitation is also expected on Tuesday, with evening thunderstorms anticipated in parts of the FCT, Nasarawa, Benue, and Plateau States.

Acting Director-General of FEMD, Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, has urged residents to take safety precautions, particularly while driving during or immediately after heavy downpours.

“Please always wait for the water level to recede before driving during a heavy downpour,” he appealed, warning of the risks of driving into waterlogged areas.

Engr. Mohammed also advised residents to switch off electrical appliances during storms to prevent electrical hazards and to remain indoors during severe weather conditions unless movement is absolutely necessary.

He further emphasized the importance of utilizing the toll-free 112 emergency number to report distress situations and emergencies across the FCT.

The FEMD reiterated its commitment to proactive disaster risk communication and response, urging members of the public to remain alert and follow official updates as the wet season progresses.
