…as NAF reinforces airpower capabilities with mission-oriented training for SNCOS

By Nkechi Eze

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has intensified efforts to strengthen its operational effectiveness by fostering airmindedness among its personnel as an essential attribute of a formidable and adaptable air force.

As part of this drive, the Air Warfare and Doctrine Centre (AWDC), Abuja, on 24 March 2025, commenced the Air Power Orientation Course for Airmen (APOCA), a specialised training programme designed to enhance the strategic understanding of airpower among Senior Non-Commissioned Officers (SNCOs).

The Course is an initiative of the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, whose Command Philosophy prioritises ‘Deliberate Training and Mission-Oriented Force Development’ as a key pillar of airpower enhancement.

According to the CAS “Air-mindedness is the backbone of an effective Air Force, as it fosters a deep understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities of airpower”.

The APOCA incorporates high-quality instruction, featuring expert resource persons, including serving and retired pilots with extensive operational experience. It aims to deepen SNCOs’ knowledge of critical airpower enablers. This includes Force Protection, Irregular Warfare, Legal Dimensions of Air Operations, and Leadership Concepts.

Speaking at the course inauguration, the Commandant of AWDC, Air Vice Marshal MC Ekwueme, underscored the pivotal role of airmindedness in shaping a professional and combat-ready force. He urged participants to remain focused, as their enhanced expertise would directly contribute to NAF’s operational success. The successful completion of the APOCA is a prerequisite for the 2025 SNCOs Promotion Exercise. As the NAF continues to modernise and adapt to evolving security challenges, airmindedness remains the foundation for a highly capable and responsive air force.
