The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has warned residents of Maigatari Local Government Area of Jigawa State against a fraudulent enumeration exercise being conducted by individuals impersonating its officials to target persons purportedly affected by disasters.
The agency disclaimed the exercise, stating that the individuals involved were neither its staff nor authorised to conduct any registration or enumeration on its behalf.
NEMA, in a statement, said the unauthorised exercise could expose unsuspecting residents to fraud, urging members of the public to disregard the activity and avoid providing personal information or making payments to the impersonators.
The agency explained that all legitimate enumeration, assessment and registration exercises were conducted in line with established procedures and in collaboration with state governments through their respective State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs).
It stressed that any exercise carried out outside the approved procedures remained unauthorised and invalid.
NEMA particularly advised residents of affected communities in Maigatari to remain vigilant and avoid individuals claiming to facilitate registration, access to humanitarian assistance or eligibility for disaster relief without proper authorisation.
The agency reiterated its commitment to transparency, accountability and integrity in the discharge of its humanitarian responsibilities, assuring the public that all legitimate interventions were carried out through due process and by duly authorised personnel.
It urged residents to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of any purported NEMA activity before sharing personal information or engaging with individuals claiming to represent the agency.
