The Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DECAN) has commiserated with the families of the 25 victims of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft crash in Ondo State, as well as the Nigerian Air Force and the entire Armed Forces of Nigeria, over the tragic loss of lives.
In a statement signed by its President, Odita Sunday, DECAN said it received the news of the crash with profound shock and sadness, describing the incident as a painful loss to the affected families and the nation.
The association extended its condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the victims, noting that no words could adequately capture the pain of losing loved ones in such sudden and tragic circumstances.
DECAN also commiserated with the Chief of the Air Staff, officers and airmen of the Nigerian Air Force, stressing that the incident was not only a loss to the service but a profound national tragedy.
The association acknowledged the courage, dedication and sacrifices of NAF personnel who continue to undertake demanding operations in defence of the country, often under difficult and hazardous conditions.
It urged Nigerians to respect the dignity and privacy of the bereaved families while allowing relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
DECAN further appealed for restraint in the circulation of unverified information, graphic materials and speculative narratives, warning that such content could worsen the anguish of the affected families and the wider military community.
The association said the tragedy also underscored the responsibility of journalists covering the Armed Forces to uphold accuracy, professionalism and compassion, particularly when reporting incidents involving loss of lives.
DECAN reaffirmed its commitment to responsible and credible reporting of defence and security affairs and prayed for strength and fortitude for the bereaved families, as well as eternal rest for the souls of the departed.
